Ekstrom and MCW's Jonah Mayo ran stride-for-stride throughout the 5K race, but Ekstrom's 16 minute, 39-second race put him just ahead of Mayo's 28th-place finish of 16:40.

"We were shooting for top 25, and Cade was as high as 16th with a mile to go in the race. All things considered though, with his hip and everything, it was a good finish for him," said Madelia/ Truman head coach Pete Goeringer.

MCW's Walter Fuller came in with a time of 16:54 for a 44th-place finish. Chris Kahler ran a 17:16 for 83rd place, while Nick Holm finished 107th in 17:34.

Dylan Brockman completed the Mavericks' team score with a 111th-place finish in 17:37.

Matthew Viesselman ran just behind Brockman, who was 113th in 17:37. Daniel Smith rounded out the MCW effort with a 151st finish of 18:19.

Fenske's finish of 17:24, was good for 99th place for the Jayhawks.

"After the first mile of the race, I thought that Ricki lost a little focus. He was staying around the top 50, but he got back into it. With a race like that, it's hard to make up time, but he wasn't far off from his section time so I was very happy," said Goeringer.

The No. 1-ranked Perham boys took the first-place team crown, led by senior Matt Welch. Welch finished first overall in 15:34. while Waseca's Shane Streich finished third in 15:52 to top section finishers.

On the girls' side, Martin County West's Morgan Larson led the area finishers with her 48th-place finish of 15:40 to pace the Mavericks' to a 12th-place finish. Whitney Smith was not far behind, finishing 56th in 15:44.

Noel Bjerken finished in 16:20 for 103rd place, while Rachel Viesselman finished 137th in 16:50. Brooke Anderson completed the MCW scoring by finishing in 150th place in a time of 17:22.

Anna Carlson and Emily Bettin rounded out the Maverick effort with finishes of 167th and 169th in 18:16 and 18:22, respectively.

Fischer finished in 80th place for the Cardinals, coming in at 16:00.

"It wasn't a personal-best time for her (Fischer), but it was one of her career-best performances," said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk. "She was pretty nervous before the race, but she paced herself well and competed to the finish. This season, she improved a lot, and going from 39th-place in the section last year to 80th in the state this year is a great way to finish the season."

Grandgenett saved her best races for the last two of the season. After running a personal-best at the section meet, she responded by running her second-best career time at the state meet. The lone Buc at Northfield on Saturday, Grandgenett finished 87th in a time of 16:05.

"I thought she did very well for the state meet. The first time you run a large meet like that, there are so many runners and they are so fast, if you are used to running from the front of the pack, it can be tough to be in the middle," said Blue Earth Area coach Tom Plocker.

The No. 2-ranked Esko girls team took home the Class A state championship, while The Blake School's Clare Flanagan defended her individual title by breezing by the competition for a 14:04 championship time.
