Cardinals finish 3-1, for 4th at invite

FAIRMONT - The Fairmont Cardinals volleyball team finished 3-1 for fourth place at the Pipestone Invitational on Saturday.

After dropping the opening match to the host Pipestone Arrows 21-25, 25-19, 15-10, the Cardinals rebounded to win three straight for fourth place.

The Cardinals earned their first win over Austin, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10, before beating Redwood Valley 25-23, 25-13 in the second round.

In their final match, Fairmont pounded Luverne 25-21, 25-18 to win.

Paige Bearson led the Cardinals offensive attack with 19 kills, adding 39 digs in the tournament along with 10 ace serves.

Tori Edgington recorded 15 kills, made 38 digs and four blocks for Fairmont, while Kayla Lardy tallied 14 kills and five blocks.

Kristen Campe made 38 digs, while Kersten Shantz had four blocks in the tournament.

Emily Kim went 38 of 41 serving, including seven aces, and doled out 35 set assists for the Cardinals.

Elizabeth Kim distributed 23 set assists for Fairmont.

Fairmont (11-10) hosts St. Peter in a South Central Conferene match at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Cardinal gym.

The Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Knights volleyball team finished 2-3 at the Southwest Minnesota State University Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Marshall.

The Knights lost their first two matches on Friday, losing 25-20, 25-11 to the Renville County West Jaguars. In the second match the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers downed the Knights 25-16, 25-13.

Saturday started out the same way for the Knights, with the Lincoln HI High School Rebels defeating the Knights 23-25, 25-23, 15-11.

The Knights then earned their first win of the weekend 25-16, 25-15 over Cedar Moutain-Comfrey, before winning 25-17, 25-15 over Hills-Beaver Creek.

Kristi Oberdieck and Amber Schulz led the Knights offense, each recording 20 kills.

Amanda Cegelske added 12 kills for the Knights offense. Both Cegelske and Oberdeick made one block in the tournament.

Hunter Payne doled out 52 set assists and made 23 digs for the Knights, while Effie Bentz made 26 digs and scored five ace serves.

Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain (8-18) travels to East Chain for a Valley Conference match at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Nicollet.
