Postal Service reform bill should be approved

Reflecting widespread dissatisfaction with changes made by the U.S.?Postal Service during the past few years, U.S. Rep. David McKinley has gained impressive, bipartisan support for a resolution to stop the decline in mail service.

McKinley is sponsoring a House resolution intended to instruct the Postal Service to go back to the same standards of service in effect July 1, 2012.

For those who rely on the mails, that could mean a new Postal Service commitment to deliver first-class letters and packages overnight. During 2012, the agency changed that to a 1-2 day delivery standard. Plans are to slow it down even more, to 2-4 days.

One reason for the changes is that the Postal Service, in an attempt to save money, has closed many processing facilities.

Most local residents remember when letters mailed locally stayed in this area and were delivered the next day. Often, mail is now sent to distant processing centers and is delayed as a result.

Fifty-three other members of Congress from throughout the United States have signed on as co-sponsors of McKinley’s resolution. No doubt there will be more – as constituents fed up with higher prices for worse service, urge their lawmakers to join McKinley.
