Excited about city’s future

We moved from Okabena to Fairmont in 1963 and I joined the high school teaching staff. I then worked at the Sentinel from 1967 to 1980, and then became an insurance agent, retiring on Dec. 31, 2013.

We always felt that Fairmont was an excellent choice to raise a family since it was large enough to offer plenty of opportunity to become involved with various activities and yet small enough to become well acquainted with our neighbors and church. I was a member of the Fairmont Ambulance Service from 1970 to 1997, and also joined various church, school and political activities. I have been a member of Fairmont Kiwanis Club since 1967. I’m also a volunteer for the Fairmont Hospital, CREST, and Heaven’s Food Table.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to become involved in Focus on Fairmont and Project 1590. Their goal is to promote Fairmont, especially the business climate. Hopefully, this will encourage young people to stay in Fairmont or to establish additional business opportunities that may attract others to Fairmont.

Project 1590 had invited you to share your ideas on what you thought would enhance the vitality, livability and health of the greater Fairmont community. You input is needed again to narrow down the list. Please go online to www.project1590.com and take the survey, print it out and drop it off at HyVee, Fareway Foods, Fleet and Farm or the CVB/Chamber. The deadline is April 30. More information will be released May 14.

I have truly enjoyed becoming involved with Focus on Fairmont and Project 1590. What I believe is most rewarding is that the majority of those who have become involved are the much younger men and women. I’m proud of them and it makes me excited about the future of Fairmont.
