Gary L. Mellen

FAIRMONT — A celebration of life visitation for Gary L. Mellen, 67, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 9-11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont.

Gary passed away Friday, Dec. 25, 2020, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gary Lee Mellen was born Aug. 6, 1953, in Deer River, Minn., the son of Chester and Margaret (Miller) Mellen. He received his education attending school in Madelia. On June 16, 1973, Gary was united in marriage to Lavonne “Bonnie” Thedens. Together, the couple made their home in St. James, Minn., and later Mapleton, Minn., before moving to Fairmont. Gary worked for many years at Stokely’s in Fairmont and worked at Kerry Ingredients in Blue Earth and later traveled selling drill bits. To all the neighborhood kids, Gary was known as the “Bike Man” and when they had a problem with their bike, they brought it to Gary to fix. Gary had a wonderful sense of humor and only in his later years did he fully embrace his funny side. During his spare time Gary enjoyed building model cars, fishing, and reading. He cherished spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by those that loved him. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lavonne “Bonnie” Mellen; daughter, Mariah Parsons; grandchildren, Daisy Parsons, Casey Parsons, Brandy Parsons, Andy Parsons; siblings, Gloria (Tom) Theis, Glen (Shinn) Mellen, Gilbert Mellen, Gregory (Mellen), and Theresa (Roger Bishop) Schendel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carl (Ann) Thedens, Carol (John) Simmons, Connie (Mike) Cochran, Cindy (Dennis) Gustafson, Curt (Diane) Thedens; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Margaret Mellen; son, Earl; daughter, Jenny; brother, Gerald Mellen; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Thedens and Chuck Thedens; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Mellen.
