Marjorie Louise Nelson was born January 5, 1926 in Fairmont, MN to Charles and Louise (Sanftner) Nelson and grew up there with three older brothers; Richard, Kenneth and Howard. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1944. Marjorie worked at the Ration Board during WWII. On May 18, 1948 she married Leon C. Smith. They were married 67 years until Leon passed away in 2015. Leon and Marjorie had two children, Diane and Steve. Marjorie was a homemaker until she went to work at Fairmont Railway Motors in their Exporting Department. After she retired from “the Motors”, she and Leon moved from Granada to their beloved lake home on Pokegama Lake, near Grand Rapids, Minnesota. There, with family and friends, they made many more happy memories. Marjorie was active in “Circle” at the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. She enjoyed “coffee” with lady friends, doing crossword puzzles, writing poetry, fishing, Civil War history, family ancestry and playing thousands of cribbage games each year with Leon! She loved all animals; especially the family pet dogs and all her “granddogs”! Marjorie took special interest and pride in each of her four grandchildren. Marjorie was proceeded in death by her parents, Charles and Louise Nelson; her husband, Leon C. Smith; and her brothers – Richard, Kenneth and Howard Nelson. She is survived by, and lovingly remembered by, her children: Diane (Steve) Hedberg of Plymouth and Steve (Polly) Smith of Lakeville; 4 grandchildren: Todd (Emiley) Hedberg, Jenna (Sam) Varghese, Dan (Alyssa) Smith, and Krista (Jake) Larson; 4 great grandchildren: Jonah and Jade Varghese, Eloise Smith and Amelia Hedberg; and many loving nieces and nephews who treated her like royalty.

Memorials are preferred to St. John Vianney School Endowment Fund. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
