NORTH MANKATO — Floyd L. Backstrom, age 86, of North Mankato passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. A funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at Woodland Hills Chapel in Mankato, with Pastor Kristian Bjornstad and Pastor Greggory Coop officiating. Military honors will immediately follow the service in front of Woodland Hills Chapel. Interment will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park, Mankato.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Woodland Hills Chapel. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, everyone attending the visitation and service is asked to please wear a mask and practice social distancing. Woodland Hills Funeral Home in Mankato is handling the arrangements.

Floyd was born Jan. 2, 1934, in Fairmont, Minn., to Clarence G. and Laura M. (Will) Backstrom. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Floyd graduated from Fairmont High School in 1952. On Jan. 20, 1953, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on Jan. 19, 1956.

In 1956, he was united in marriage to his high school classmate and sweetheart Judith A. Gudal in Fairmont.

For 40 years, Floyd was a fleet manager of trucks for the Madsens-Randalls grocery stores, and also was a pilot for their corporate aircraft for several years.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since 1961 in North Mankato, serving there as an Elder for 14 years and a trustee for 12 years, EAA, North Mankato American Legion Post 518, life member of the VFW Morson-Ario-Strand Post 950, NRA, Marine Corps League and a 42-year member of the Mankato Airport Commission.

In retirement, he worked at the Mankato Airport for 15+ years, then for Holtmeier Construction four years.

He enjoyed motorcycle touring for 30+ years, machine shop work (making nail crosses), target shooting and sports flying (aerobatics).

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy, of North Mankato; four children, Kim (Nick) Miller of Mankato, Jay of Mankato, Brent (Shelly) of Lakeville, Jan (Jennie) of Turlock, Calif.; six grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two sisters; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.
