LeRoy Slama

MANKATO — LeRoy James Slama, age 91, of Mankato, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Due to COVID-19 concerns, a memorial mass in celebration of LeRoy’s life will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winnebago. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

LeRoy was born June 30, 1928, in Winnebago, Minn., to Edward and Theresa (Schluttner) Slama. He attended country school for eight years before attending and graduating from Winnebago High School. LeRoy enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

On April 26, 1968, LeRoy married Marilyn Wilmes at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kenyon.

LeRoy was a lifelong farmer, and also worked as a purchasing agent for 20 years.

Very important in LeRoy’s life was faith, family, country and community. He was a member of Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Council, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, VFW, and the Korean Veteran’s Chapter.

LeRoy enjoyed wood carving and traveling, especially his trips to Spain, Germany and Hawaii.

LeRoy is survived by his wife, Marilyn; children, Gregory (Christine) Slama of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Theresa (Dan) Peters of Kasson, Kathryn (David) Scoggins of White Hall, Ark., Jeffery (Linda) Mock of Rochester, John (Lori) Mock of British Columbia; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one due in December.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Arthur, Elmer, Clarence, Lewis, Mary, Marcella, Maurice; and great-grandchild, Max.

Memorial donations can be made to Diocese of Winona – Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary and Hospice.
