FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Omar E. Behrens, age 90, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with full military honors provided by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Park, Fairmont.

Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Omar passed away Thursday afternoon, Jan. 2, 2020, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Omar Ernest Behrens was born Oct. 2, 1929, in Fraser Township, Martin County, Minn., son of Julius and Dora (Schweiger) Behrens.

On Jan. 15, 1951, Omar enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served with Company K, 135th Infantry Regiment of the 47th Infantry Division at Camp Rucker, Ala. He achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class before earning his honorable discharge on Aug. 24, 1952.

On April 17, 1955, Omar was united in marriage to Janet Peymann at Zion Lutheran Church in Fraser Township, Minn. The couple resided in Northrop, Minn., until moving to Fairmont in 1962. This union was blessed with two children, Gwen and Larry. Omar and Janet shared over 64 years together before Janet passed away on June 19, 2019.

Omar was a self-employed mechanic and owned a repair shop in Granada. He was known to work on just about anything that would fit through the shop door, including cars, trucks, school buses, tractors and other farm equipment.

Omar was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont where he was active on various church boards. He was also a member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36.

During his free time, Omar enjoyed gardening and spending time with friends, whether it be playing cards, bowling or wintering in Texas. He especially loved fishing and always looked forward to the annual family fishing trip up north or to Canada with his friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Gwen Lencowski and her husband, Tom, of Mendota Heights, Minn.; son, Larry Behrens and his wife, Kris, of Fairmont; grandchildren, Nathan Behrens and Brittany, Lisa Nelson and her husband, Devin, and John Lencowski and Kelly; great-granddaughter, Myla Nelson; sister, Velma Wilson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Julius and Dora Behrens, Omar was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Behrens; siblings, Elmer, Leona, Sylvan, Ila, Dennis, and Donna; many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and other relatives.

Memorials are preferred to St. Paul Lutheran Church and School.
