FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Virgil K. Jacobson, age 83, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Kimball Township, Alpha, Minn.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Virgil passed away peacefully Saturday morning, Oct. 12, 2019, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont after battling with many health issues the past several years.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Virgil was born Sept. 9, 1936, in Watertown, S.D., son of David and Myrtle (Cable). He grew up, attended school, and worked in Austin, Minn. Then he joined the U.S. Army in 1961, with an honorable discharge in 1962.

Virgil was united in marriage to Barbara Schoewe on May 5, 1963, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kimball Township, Alpha, Minn. They lived in Fairmont and he was a tool and dye maker for 38 years at Fairmont Railway Motors/Harsco Diversified, retiring in 2001.

Virg enjoyed coaching Junior League baseball, girl’s softball and intramural girls basketball for 20 years. Fishing, playing cards, tinkering around the house, doing laundry, watching Minnesota sports and Western shows on TV were also hobbies of his. He also cherished attending his grandchildren’s activities and showing Buc Pride.

Virg was especially known for giving advice to everyone that he loved. He had a huge heart and cared for all who knew him. Husband, dad, grandpa, uncle and friend will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memory include: his wife of 56 years, Barbara; daughters, Brenda (Todd) Smith of Blue Earth, and Pam Jacobson of North Mankato; two grandchildren, Jared (Tana) Smith of Eagle Lake and Jenny (Forrest) Passer of Rochester; brother-in-law, Bruce (Jeanette) Schoewe of Harrisburg, S.D.; uncle, Larry Allgood of Odin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, LeRoy and Thelma Schoewe; brothers, Harold (Maxine), Melvin (Joann), and David Jr.; sister-in-law, Jean (Roger) Schultz; niece, Judith; and nephew, Billy.
