EAST CHAIN — A funeral service for E. Morris Johanson, age 94, of East Chain, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, at the East Chain Lutheran Church. Burial will follow with full military honors provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 in the East Chain Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Morris passed away Tuesday evening, Aug. 27, 2019, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

On Feb. 3, 1925, the third son of Olander and Mae Johanson, was born at their home farm at East Chain, Minn.; they named him Edmund Morris. Morris graduated from East Chain High School and then entered the U.S. Army, serving as a Sergeant with the 300th Engineer Battalion. After returning, he attended Iowa State University and later returned home to the family farm.

In Fairmont, Morris met his bride, Elizabeth Jean McAlister and they were united in marriage at the East Chain Lutheran Church in East Chain, Minn., on June 2, 1951. The couple made their home in East Chain Township, where they spent the next 44 years farming and raising livestock. The farm provided Morris and his family many wonderful memories.

Morris made many friends throughout life with his sense of humor and gift to gab.

Morris served on many boards including the First National Bank, East Chain School, East Chain Lutheran Church, and Farmers Home Administration.

In 1991, Morris and Jean retired to their Menahga, Minnesota, lake home. Days were filled with fishing and wildlife observing. After 23 years at the lake, Morris and Jean moved to Blue Earth and then Fairmont.

Morris went to his heavenly home on Aug. 27, 2019, while at Lakeview Methodist surrounded by his loving family at the age of 94 years old.

Those left to cherish Morris’ memory include daughters Peg (Ron) Armbrust of Maricopa, Ariz., Charlie (Bob) Adams of Chugiak, Alaska; sons, Garry (Carla) of Fargo, N.D., Brian (Teresa) of Swea City, Iowa, Greg (Shelli) of East Chain, Minn. Morris also leaves a legacy of nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; infant daughter, Kathy Gay; parents; brothers, Lawrence and Melvin; and sister, Phyllis Brown.
