Robert P. Steger Sr.

FAIRMONT — Mass of Christian Burial for Robert P. Steger Sr., 83, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Military honors by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222 will be held outside the church following the service. Burial will be held at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wis. Visitation will be 3-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, in the chapel at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, with a rosary to be held at 6 p.m.

Bob passed away Monday morning, Aug. 19, 2019, at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert Peter Steger Sr. was born April 2, 1936, in Theresa, Wis., son of Leander and Cordula (Weber) Steger. He received his education attending Boys Technical High School in Milwaukee. Following a short time of working, Bob enlisted with the U.S. Navy on Sept. 16, 1957. He traveled to the Great Lakes Naval Academy in Illinois where he received his basic training. Bob was stationed in Beeville, Texas, and later San Diego, Calif., where he earned his honorable discharge on March 14, 1961. While in high school, Bob met his sweetheart, Marlys Anita Schmit. On Oct. 18, 1958, Bob was united in marriage to Marlys in Milwaukee, Wis. Together, the couple would be blessed with five children, Mary, Robert Jr., Peter, Mark, and Jeff. In 1985, Robert and Marlys moved to Fairmont where Bob worked for Railway Motors and later Harsco/Greenlee Textron as a manufacturing engineer. Bob was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. He earned the rank of fourth-degree Grand Knight and served as a District Deputy. Bob loved to volunteer and gave of his time for over 20 years at the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in addition to driving for CREST. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed the crisp fall air sitting in a deer stand waiting for the next big buck. He had a passion for firearms and looked forward to days spend at the range honing his skills for the next great hunt. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mary (Wayne) Dahnke of Hartford, Wis.; two sons, Robert Jr. (Diane) Steger of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Jeff (Amanda) Steger of Williston, N.D.; daughter-in-law, Sue Arrowwood Elliott of Waterford, Wis.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Ralph (Laura) Steger of Calif, and Marvin Steger of Milwaukee, Wis.; sister, Sue (Bill) Groth of New Berlin, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Ron (Barb) Schmit of Waukesha, Wis., and Hans Lescher of Sussex, Wis.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Leander and Cordula Steger; wife, Marlys Steger; sons, Peter Steger and Mark Steger; sister, Pat Lescher; brother, Ronnie Steger; and other family.
