FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Ewald W. Schnitzmeier, age 94, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, 2019, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont, with military honors provided by Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222.

Ewald passed away Monday afternoon, June 3, 2019, at Goldfinch Memory Care in Fairmont.

Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ewald William Schnitzmeier was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Tenhassen Township, Minn., the son of Henry and Minnie (Lueking) Schnitzmeier. Ewald was baptized on Aug. 17, 1924. He attended German school in Wilbert through second grade before attending East Chain and later Fairmont High School.

On Feb. 18, 1950, Ewald was united in marriage to Vivian Erickson at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. This union was blessed with five children: Nancy, Jeanne, Steve, Vicki and Jill. The couple resided on a farm near Wilbert, Minn., then near Welcome, Minn., before moving to Fairmont in 1960. Ewald and Vivian shared nearly 46 years together before Vivian passed away on Jan. 6, 1996.

On Nov. 19, 1945, Ewald enlisted in the U.S. Army. He received his training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Ewald served as an engineer operator, gas pump operator, and heavy equipment operator in Guam and Saipan. He achieved the rank of Tec5 before earning his honorary discharge in January of 1947.

Ewald worked as a farmer until moving to Fairmont. He then worked a Fairmont Glass as well as Stokely Van Camp. He later worked in maintenance for Con Agra and as a security guard at Weigh Tronix. He retired from Con Agra in 1988. Ewald later retired from Weigh Tronix in 2011.

Along with being a life member of the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222, Ewald was also a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ where he was a member of the choir and church council.

During his free time, Ewald enjoyed family camping trips, caring for his cows and woodworking. He especially loved visiting with people.

Left to cherish his memory include his children, Nancy (Gary) Schomberg of Fairmont, Minn., Jeanne Berhow of Fairmont, Vicki (Mark) Bulfer of Northrop, Minn., Jill (Randy) Diekmann of Fairmont; daughter-in-law, Joan Schnitzmeier of Fairmont; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ardys Erickson of Fairmont; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Henry and Minnie Schnitzmeier, Ewald was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Schnitzmeier; son, Steven Schnitzmeier; brothers, Marvin, Gordon, and Wayne Schnitzmeier; sisters, Mildren (Vern) Johnson, Elda (Denton) Cave, and Lorraine (Bud) Wilson; brothers-in-law, Dan (Lorain) Erickson, Joe (Mert) Walling; sister-in-law, Ethel (Dan) Boone of Prescott, Ariz.
