Arlo passed away Saturday morning, June 1, 2019, at the St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth, Minn.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Arlo W. Gustafson was born June 16, 1925, on the family farm in Silver Lake Township, Martin County, Minn., the son of Herman and Mabel (Buhmann) Gustafson. He received his education attending country school not far from his home.

On May 25, 1944, Arlo began his service to his country serving as a fireman first class aboard the U.S.S. Stanly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Arlo was a part of landings in the Philippine Islands, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. On May 22, 1946, Arlo received his honorable discharge and returned home to Minnesota.

Arlo worked road construction for many years and running a drag line was his favorite job. In the winter months, he kept busy driving truck for Ollie West. After buying him out in 1962, Arlo began working as an owner/operator driving his own truck for many years.

On July 22, 1951, Arlo was united in marriage to Donna “Dottie” Schultz in Fairmont, Minn. Together, the couple made their home in Fairmont and raised their four children, Jarri, Randy, Tory and Tracy.

Arlo was a hard-working man, born and raised during the Depression. He took pride in a hard day’s work and would rather be wrenching on his truck covered in grease than by wasting his hard-earned money with a hobby.

He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and was a life member for over 60 years of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1222.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jarri (Bill) Douglas of Armstrong, Iowa, Randy (Denise) Gustafson of Blue Earth, Minn., Tory (Judy) Gustafson of Fairmont, Tracy (Karen) Gustafson of Blue Earth; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Charles (Alvada) Gustafson of East Chain, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Shirley and Sonja; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Arlo was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mabel; wife, Donna “Dottie” Gustafson; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Ken Reese; as well as several other family members.
