FAIRMONT — A memorial service for Betty Rettke, 87, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with burial to follow the service in Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Fairmont. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont.

Betty passed away Monday morning, Jan. 15, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Betty J. (Hudson) Rettke was born Oct. 30, 1930, in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Leonard and Hermine Geraldine (Reinen) Hudson. She attended county school District #59 through the 8th grade and finished her education attending Jackson High School in Jackson, Minn., graduating with the class of 1948.

Following her graduation, Betty went on to receive her license as a RNA and worked for University Hospital in Minneapolis before returning to Fairmont. Betty then worked for J.C. Penney’s, Gardner Pharmacy and Armour Foods in Fairmont.

On Jan. 6, 1973, Betty was united in marriage to Ed Rettke at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minn. Together, the couple made their home in Fairmont and were blessed with 45 years of marriage. The couple also owned and operated Harold’s Shoe Store for many years prior to their retirement.

Betty was extremely active in her community, serving as a past president and member of the Martin County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1222 Auxiliary in addition to being past president of the VFW 2nd District. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #36 Auxiliary and life member and past president of the Fairmont Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Church was extremely important to Betty and she was a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she helped teach Sunday school as well as serving on the Altar Guild and funeral committee.

In her youth, Betty also helped as a Cub Scout leader.

In her spare time, Betty enjoyed fishing, dancing, and playing cards. She loved her quiet time spent crocheting and knitting afghans and giving them as gifts to family and friends.

Following their retirement, Betty and Ed looked forward to winters spent in Texas, where they enjoyed attending Wurstfest.

Her summers were spent tending to her gardens and making sure to keep the birds and ducks well fed. A special gift for Betty was the hanging basket of flowers that she would get from her children each year at Mother’s Day and they flourished all summer long with her devoted care.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Ed Rettke of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Barb Elliott and her husband, Steve, of League City, Texas, Robert Rettke and his wife, Tammy, of Fairmont, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Jan Pruess; grandchildren, Tom Elliott and his wife, Michelle, Kandi Elliott, Alan Rettke, Nathan Rettke, and Ashley Rettke; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gloria Smith, Joan Graham and her husband, Jerry; as well as nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Hermine Hudson; two sons, Rodger Eggestein and David Eggestein; and a brother, Robert Hudson.
