Janet Johnson

ARMSTRONG — Janet Lee Johnson, 82, of Armstrong, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at her home, surrounded by members of her family. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2018, at

United Methodist Church in Swea City, Iowa, with Pastor Todd Hartsock officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today, May 3, at United Methodist Church in Swea City. She will be laid to rest at a later date in Harrison Township Cemetery, rural Swea City.

She was born July 19, 1935, in Burt, Iowa, to Cecil and Florence Godfredson, and graduated from Swea City High School in 1953.

Janet married Mervin Johnson on June, 4, 1954, and together they had six children.

The main focus throughout Janet’s life was her family. She worked tirelessly and selflessly to make sure their needs were met, and she devoted much of her life to supporting her children’s (and grandchildren’s) many activities. She showed her love for family in many ways, but especially through her deeds, mainly cooking. During fair week and family holiday gatherings, she loved to cook and bake for large numbers of people.

Janet also enjoyed camping, gardening, snowmobiling, and sewing. She created floral arrangements and made the bouquets for her three daughters’ weddings.

She created some of her family’s fondest memories by buying a houseboat that she and her husband, as well as countless family members and friends, enjoyed in South Silver Lake for many summers.

Beyond her devotion to family, Janet was an active member of the community. Over the years, she served as a 4-H leader, was president of the PTA, president of band parents, a board member of the Pork Producers at both the local and state level, and a member of the Historical Society of Swea City.

She was also an active member of Swea City United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, president of United Methodist Women, and attending her Circle for over 60 years.

In addition to maintaining her household and working on the farm, Janet was later employed at Forest Ridge Youth Services.

Janet is survived by her husband of 63 years, Mervin; her children, Doug (Lisa) Johnson of Ridgecrest, Calif., Lewis Johnson of Viroqua, Wis., Lisa (Larry) Olson of Armstrong, Kandis (Bill) Pritchett of Midland, Mich., Anita (Nick) Helmich of Estherville; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Theresa; sister, Rita Snyder; infant granddaughter, Candis Johnson; and an infant great-grandson, Preston Hawks.

Janet’s courageous battle with her illness and the grace with which she accepted are reflected in the words of 2 Timothy 4:7. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
