Thorvald Olson

ORMSBY — Thorvald Olson, age 94, of Ormsby, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at Luther Memorial Home in Madelia. A service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at the Hosanna Free Lutheran Church-St. James, with Rev. Joe Faldet officiating.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017, at Sturm Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Long Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural St. James, Minn.

Thorvald Norman Olson was born May 5, 1923, to Theodore and Sarah Constance (Romsdahl) Olson of rural Ormsby, Minn. Thorvald attended school in Ormsby through the eighth grade and then farmed with his father. Thorvald served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War Two. Afterward, he attended Gustavus Adolphus College.

Thorvald married Lucille Ek on April 21, 1950, in Trimont. After their marriage, they farmed near Ormsby until retirement. He was a member of Hosanna Free Lutheran Church in St. James.

Thorvald had a wide range of interests including reading, traveling, singing in the choir, playing the piano and organ, writing music, photography, drawing and painting, and spending time with his family.

Thorvald is survived by his sons, Steven (Norma) Olson of Austin, Minn., Kelvin (Elaine) Olson of Coggon, Iowa; daughters, Beth Munsterman of Ceylon, Minn.; and Lorene (Bruce) Anderson of Madelia, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Siv Ek of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Leona Lokkesmoe of Fairmont, Marian Johnson of Fairmont; and brothers-in-law, Leland Ek of Mapleton, Lowell (Peggy) Ek of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and Albert Armbrust of Truman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lucille; infant son, Michael, his son-in-law, David Munsterman, sisters, Sylvia (Olson) Scearcy and husband, George, Avis (Olson) Jagodzinske and husband, Rudy; brothers-in-law, Robert Ek, Knute Lokkesmoe, and Pete Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Muriel Armbrust and Marilyn Ek.
