ARMSTRONG — Madeline L. Gerlach passed away on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Armstrong, Iowa, with Father Merlin Schrad, Celebrant. Interment will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Elkton, S.D. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Armstrong.

Madeline Loretta (Peterson) Gerlach, daughter of Alvin and Myra (Luze) Peterson, was born Aug. 5, 1943, in Hendricks, Minn. In 1961, She graduated from high school in Elkton, S.D. Madeline then attended beauty school in St. Paul, Minn., and was employed as a hairdresser for about five years.

On May 1, 1965, she was united in marriage to Donald Gerlach in Elkton, S.D. The couple moved to the Armstrong area in 1969. Madeline was employed at Jack Rosenberg Electric, TG Industries, and with Home Health at various times throughout her life.

Madeline enjoyed gardening and attending sporting events. Madeline was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Armstrong; where she was a member of the Altar Society and taught religious education classes for 10 years.

Madeline is survived by her husband, Donald of Armstrong; her son, Anthony (Brenda) Gerlach of Wausau, Wis.; her daughters, Maria (Deryl) Cunningham of Glen Carbon, Ill., and Kristi Schmidt of West Des Moines, Iowa; her five grandchildren, Abigail, Payson, Ciara, Braylon, and Nyah. Madeline is also survived by her siblings, Peter Peterson, Joan Scheller, Jeannette (Verl) Southwick, Kathryn (Lloyd) Kuder, and Monica (Dan) Lorang, and her brother-in-law, Tim Geiske.
