Joseph Matthew Burdorf was welcomed into the world at 9:31 a.m. Oct. 5, 1975, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Edwin and Dana (Petersen) Burdorf. He began his education attending parochial school at the Emmetsburg Catholic School and later attending Emmetsburg High School where he graduated with the class of 1994. Joe went on to further his education, attending Iowa Lakes Community College, where he studied carpentry and earned his degree.

Carpentry was a passion for Joe and shortly after his graduation from Iowa Lakes he opened his own carpentry shop, Burdorf Building Services, and operated out of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

At a garage party hosted by one of Joe’s many friends, he met Stephanie Simon and the couple was later married on April 10, 2010, at United Methodist Church in Fairmont.

Joe loved his job as a carpenter and took great pride in a job well done and helping people. He was one who would always see the good in people and wasn’t afraid to give someone a second chance. Joe loved his family and looked forward hugs from his little buddy, Simon, and kisses from his little princess, Carlee.

In his youth, Joe enjoyed playing basketball and made sure everyone knew he was going to be the next Larry Bird. His love of sports spilled over into his love for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Family was extremely important to Joe and he treasured the many memories made throughout the years with them. His zest for life and his kind and caring ways will be greatly missed by those that loved him and called him a friend.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Stephanie Burdorf of Fairmont, Minn.; children, Simon Burdorf, Carlee Burdorf, and Nathan (Callie) Hartmann; parents, Edwin and Dana Burdorf of Emmetsburg, Iowa; siblings, Chris (Jolinda) Burdorf, Anny (Jake) Fiene, and Molly (Kyle) Dietrich; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Joyce Simon; sisters-in-law, Lisa (Todd) Edgington and Julie (Tony) Olson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by an infant sister, Kara Ann Burdorf; and his grandparents.
