MADELIA — Shirley Marilyn Karau, age 81, of Madelia, Minn., died Monday, June 26, 2017, after a three month battle with multiple myeloma at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2017, at Salem Lutheran Church in Madelia, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The clergy will be Rev. Greg Volbrecht. Interment will be at Trinity Fieldon Lutheran Cemetery, rural Madelia.

Shirley Marilyn Sherman was born March 5, 1936, in Trimont, Minn., to Earl Thomas and Mildred Sherman. She was a graduate of Truman High School.

She married Murten Gustav Karau at the Waverly Lutheran Church on Oct. 9, 1954. The couple was blessed with four children: Douglas, Brenda, Kevin and Barb. They lived on their family farm until 1993, when they moved to town in Madelia, Minn.

Shirley worked as a homemaker most of her life. After her children were grown, she began working at Tony Downs and was employed there for nearly 25 years.

In her free time, she enjoyed hobbies such as gardening and traveling.

Shirley is survived by her children, Douglas (Mona) Karau of Emerald, Wis., Brenda (Jim) Miller of Buffalo, Minn., Kevin (Terri) Karau of Amboy, Minn., Barbara (Roger) Warnke of Arlington, Texas; brothers, John (Joanne) Sherman and James (MaryLou) Sherman both of Truman, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Murten Karau; and parents, Earl and Mildred Sherman.
