Tyler passed away Wednesday evening, June 28, 2017, as a result of a motorcycle accident near Mankato, Minn. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Tyler Wallace Mathiason came calmly into the world weighing 9 pounds, 9 ounces on Aug. 14, 1996, in Fairmont, Minn., the son of Myron and Roxanne (Bergstrom) Mathiason. He would be welcomed home by his three older brothers and an instant bond was formed.

As a young boy, Tyler began his education attending Granada-Huntley-East Chain Schools, where he was active in many things. Tyler took pride in being a member of the Boy Scouts Troop #56 in Fairmont, where he excelled in various activities and loved outdoor adventures.

By the time Tyler had reached high school, he had traded in his shoes for a special-ordered size 16 and had grown to 6’8″. Despite his large frame, Tyler was a gentle as they came and never met anyone he wouldn’t call a friend. Tyler graduated from GHEC High School with the class of 2015.

After conning his brothers into doing oil changes for him for years, Tyler surprised everyone in the family when he enrolled at Mankato State University in automotive engineering. It was during the first few days of college and an offer of fresh-baked brownies and video games that Tyler would meet Emily Knutson and they soon became a couple.

Tyler worked hard at everything he did and took great pride in a job well done. While in high school, he worked his way up through Subway and other various jobs and was currently employed with Valvoline Rapid Oil Change in Mankato and was known for his tremendous work ethic.

In his spare time, Tyler enjoyed hunting with friends and family, and especially his brothers. Tyler was the one who never got rattled when the big deer came within range of him. While hunting pheasants, his red-green colorblindness made for some laughs as he would let the roosters walk right past him, leaving his brothers scrambling to get a shot. Tyler was also known to enjoy his time in a tree stand sleeping but always woke up at just the right time so not to miss an opportunity. Tyler had a passion for golf and loved a good bonfire and beer with family and friends. He loved to help others out and would do anything for others at the drop of the hat. He will be greatly missed by those that loved him and called him a friend.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Roxanne (Joel Schutt) Mathiason of Mapleton, Minn.; father, Myron (Rose Mortenson) Mathiason; brothers, Nathan Mathiason of Granada, Minn., Jared (Amy) Mathiason of Faribault, Minn., and Blake (Michelle) Mathiason of Granada, Minn.; three nephews, Parker, Benet, and Camden; girlfriend, Emily Knutson of Mankato, Minn.; best friend, James Helgate of Fairmont, Minn.; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends.

Tyler was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orrin and Sophie Mathiason, Waldo and Rachel Bergstrom; and great-grandparents, Marion and Gladys Hartness.
