ORMSBY — A Celebration of Life service for Donald R. Winkelman, 92, of rural Ormsby, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 11, 2017, at First Lutheran Church in St. James, Minn., with Pastor Maggie Cumings officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, St. James, Minn., with military honors by the St. James Honor Guard.

Donald was called to his eternal rest on Sunday evening, May 7, 2017, at the Trimont Health Care Center in Trimont, Minn. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church in St. James.

Donald Richard Winkelman was born March 15, 1925, in Ormsby, Minn., to Herman and Tillie (Bast) Winkelman. He attended country school in District #67 in Galena Township and later worked on the family farm. On Dec. 14, 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and served until his honorable discharge on June 4, 1946.

On March 16, 1947, he was united in marriage to Velma Olson at Long Lake Lutheran Church in rural St. James, Minn. After their marriage, they farmed in Galena Township, rural Ormsby, Minn.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in St. James and a former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Galena Township, where he served on various church offices.

Don loved his family, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Don enjoyed going fishing and bear hunting with his wife and hunting with his grandchildren. Don always had a twinkle in his eye as he enjoyed visiting with many people and loved to tell stories.

Survivors include his son, Keith (Linda) Winkelman of rural St. James, Minn.; daughter, Karen (David) Lieser of Montevideo, Minn.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, LaVon Olson of St. James, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Lucille Flohrs of Ormsby, Minn., Vivian Anderson of St. James, Minn., Mary Lou Oldenburg of St. James, Minn.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife; parents; father and mother-in-law, Adolph and Clara Olson; mother-in-law, Agnes Olson; brother, Stanley Winkelman; sister, Burnette Bowen; brothers-in-law, Curt Bowen, Eldon Olson, Vernon Flohrs, John Oldenburg; and other relatives.
