Police: Man shot and killed

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say a man was fatally shot in north Minneapolis’ Folwell neighborhood early Tuesday.

The Star Tribune reports they shooting occurred at about 1:25 a.m. Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder said when officers arrived, they found a vehicle that had struck several parked cars in the middle of the block. They also found a man inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was not breathing and did not have a pulse when officers pulled him from the vehicle and began CPR. Elder said paramedics arrived and took over, but were unsuccessful in reviving the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s death pushed the city’s homicide total for the year to 77.

Walz, House GOP unveil aid plans

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Minnesota House Republicans on Tuesday unveiled aid proposals targeted at providing relief to small businesses that have been hit hard by the tightening of the state’s restrictions to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Walz said his package is aimed at keeping businesses afloat, supporting workers struggling to get by, and helping families keep food on the table. The package includes direct aid to businesses, waiving licensing fees for the hospitality industry, extending unemployment benefits, and $500 one-time emergency payments to struggling families. His statement did not put a price tag on the package.

The House GOP proposal includes direct grants to businesses that would be aimed at providing relief for Main Street establishments impacted by the governor’s latest executive orders. Republican lawmakers propose using $400 million from the state’s rainy day fund, and then repaying it with federal aid if Congress agrees on a relief package.

State board meets to certify election results

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota’s state canvassing board was to meet Tuesday to certify the state’s election results, an ordinarily routine task that is drawing closer attention due to President Donald Trump’s efforts to delay it in key states.

Joe Biden defeated Trump in Minnesota by more than 230,000 votes, or about 7 percentage points.

Minnesota’s board is made up of Secretary of State Steve Simon; Minnesota Supreme Court Justices Margaret Chutich and Gordon Moore; and Hennepin County District Judges Regina Chu and Christian Sande.
