2020 Scouting for Food campaign a success

MANKATO — According to Ray Brauer, scout executive/CEO of Twin Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, this year’s Scouting for Food campaign raised a total of $6,525 for 18 different food shelves across a 15-county territory in south central Minnesota. This includes a $1,000 match donation from Mankato Masonic Lodge #12.

Traditionally, the Scouts collect 30,000-40,000 pounds of food by putting post notes on doors one weekend and collecting food donations the next. Due to COVID-19 and ultimately the Governor’s “Stay at Home” order, this type of campaign was not possible. However, because of the increased need that food banks have, it was believed that this service project was too important to cancel, then an idea came together for this online campaign.

According to the “Feeding America” website, a $1 donation equals approximately 12 pounds of food that can be purchased. This means this year’s campaign will help purchase approximately 78,300 pounds of food for the needy. This is double the amount of food they normally are able to collect.

Following are donation amounts for towns in our area:

q Blue Earth — $40 = 480 pounds

q Fairmont — $75 = 900 pounds

q Jackson — $40 = 480 pounds

q Madelia — $120 = 1,440 pounds

q St. James — $220 = 2,640 pounds
