Survey: Bankers’ hopes buoyed

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new survey of bankers in rural parts of 10 Plains and Western states suggests they are optimistic about the economy over the next few months, thanks to the signings of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement and the China trade agreement.

The finding was one of several in the latest Rural Mainstreet Survey. The overall index for February declined to 51.6 from 55.9 in January. Any score above 50 suggests a growing economy, while a score below 50 indicates a shrinking economy, organizers say.

The survey’s confidence index increased to a healthy 58.1 from January’s weak 50.0, the survey report said.

Superior refinery evacuated

SUPERIOR, Wis. (AP) — Workers at an oil refinery in Superior were evacuated because of concerns of a tower collapse.

The Husky Energy refinery is being rebuilt after major damage from an explosion and fire in 2018.

Police said that while crews were working on a tower Thursday they heard a pop and realized there was a defect in the “tower’s structural integrity.” The company says the tower was moving in the wind.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports workers were evacuated, electric and gas service was turned off and the road adjacent to the refinery was closed.
