FAIRMONT– A house fire on South Park Street in Fairmont claimed the life of one 43-year-old man on Monday night.
According to Captain Mike Beletti of the Fairmont Police Department, Fairmont Fire, Mayo Ambulance and Fairmont Police were all dispatched just before 5 p.m. to the 300 block of South Park Street for a report of a structure fire of an occupied residence.
“Officers arrived on scene and immediately reported flames that were engulfing the basement area and they attempted to extinguish the flames with their fire extinguishers but were unsuccessful and being overtaken by the smoke,” Beletti said.
He said that one 43-year-old male, who has not yet been identified, was located in the home and transported to the emergency room, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
One other occupant of the home was treated and released. A third occupant refused medical attention.
“At this point in time, four officers were also treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital,” Beletti said, noting that they’re all expected to be fine.
Assisting on Monday night were Truman Fire Department, Welcome Fire Department, Jackson Fire Department, Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Truman Ambulance.
Beletti said that the investigation is ongoing with the Minnesota State Fire Marshal and as of 9:30 p.m. on Monday night the fire was still active with first responders still on scene.
