City looking to fill board positions

FAIRMONT– The city of Fairmont has several openings on several boards and commissions and is looking for volunteers to fill them.

City Administrator, Cathy Reynolds, said, “We encourage people to find an area that they’re interested in.”

Reynolds said at the beginning of every year the city council makes appointments to the boards and commissions as terms expire.

“We accept applications for these positions,” Reynolds said.

Those currently on a board or commission, but whose term is up, will be asked to reapply.

Reynolds said while members on the boards and commissions don’t have decision making abilities, they can hear what’s going on and make recommendations to the city council.

The Park Board meets on a monthly basis, with the exception of three winter months. Reynolds said the budget goes to them first and they make recommendations to the council on what should go into the capital plan for parks.

The Planning Commission also meets once a month and looks at conditional use permits and will make recommendations on whether to grant permits.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is interrelated but separate from the Planning Commission. It hears petitions relating to zoning requirements.

The Airport Board hears updates regarding the airport and provides advice and recommendations relating to it.

The Safety Council meets several times a year. It hears complaints or suggestions from the community regarding traffic and pedestrian safety issues and will make recommendations to the council.

Reynolds said if there’s nothing for a board or commission to address, meetings will be cancelled for the month.

“This is a way for people to get engaged and involved in the community and help guide the direction of the city,” Reynolds said.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 27. Interested people can pick up an application at City Hall or apply online at fairmont.org. More information on each board and commission is also available on the city’s website.

“The first city council meeting in January is when we hope to make the appointments and the new boards and commissions start in February,” Reynolds said.
