Faribault County looks for attorney

BLUE EARTH — Faribault County commissioner Greg Young informed his fellow County Board members there have been two applications submitted for the County Attorney position.

“We are in the process of scheduling interviews with the prospective candidates,” Young said.

The search for a new County Attorney became necessary when Kathryn Karjala submitted her resignation in early April.

The effective date of Karjala’s resignation is July 2. Karjala has offered to help in the transition phase of a new attorney if one is able to be hired before she is set to leave.

Public Works director Mark Daly attended the meeting and reported work will begin this summer on replacing the street name signs in the county.

“The cost of the materials is $83,000,” Daly told the board. “We will do one half of the county this year and the remaining half of the county in 2022.”

Daly also gave a summary of a speed report conducted on the former U.S. Highway 16 from Fairmont to Blue Earth.

“County State Aid Highway 26, which is what the highway is named in Martin County, was approved for 60 miles per hour traffic,” Daly explained. “CSAH 16 in Faribault County was not approved for the increased speed. The reason listed was too many “left the road” crashes on the highway.”

Daly said there is still a chance the road could get an OK to increase the speed.

“If we add shoulder rumble strips when we resurface the road this summer, it may improve the chance for the highway to be designated as a 60 mph road,” Daly said.

Following some discussion with board members, a decision was made to remove the 50 mph speed zones at Guckeen and Brush Creek.

Daly also had an update on the construction projects for this summer.

“The overlays on CSAH 1 and CSAH 16 are set to begin mid-July,” Daly commented. “The bridge projects are slated to begin mid-August.”
