Fairmont schools talk trades building

FAIRMONT — The Fairmont School Board meeting took place Tuesday evening via Zoom due to poor weather conditions.

The board heard from a representative of Ehlers, a financial planner based out of Roseville, regarding the districts construction trades project.

The district is proposing a new 13,860 sq. foot construction trades building that will be located on the south side of the Fairmont High School building.

The board is seeking the approval of the Minnesota Department of Education. The proposed cost of the project is $6.7 million, which the board is seeking in bonds with a modest tax increase on local property.

For a house with an estimated market value of $100,000, the estimated impact on taxes payable in 2022 is an $11 increase. For a house with with an estimated value of $250,000, there would be an increase of $35 in property taxes.

If MDE provides a positive review and comment, voters will be asked to approve the proposal at the Feb. 9, 2021 special election.

“This is a proposal that we’ve been working on for a year and a half internally,” said superintendent Joe Brown.

During Tuesday’s meeting the board made a motion to send the proposal to MDE for review.

If approved by MDE, voters in the district will be asked for the school district to sell bonds in the amount of $6.7 million that will be used in the next year and a half. Voting would take place on Feb. 9, 2021 at the National Guard Armory in Fairmont and the Ceylon Fire Hall, though there will also likely be an option to vote by mail.

If approved, the plan is for construction of the building to be complete and ready for use in the 2022-23 school year

In other news, three school board members, Julie Laue, Nicole Green and Dan Brookens were also acknowledged after being re-elected during last week’s election. All three ran unopposed.

The board approved the employment of:
