Martin County West utilizing relief funds

SHERBURN — Martin County West School Board this week received an update on how the district is utilizing COVID-19 relief funds.

Board members learned $180,000 has been used for personal protective equipment, sanitizing supplies ($50,000) as well as technology: 38 laptops, 30 HPS streams, 60 iPads and two carts to help keep groups separate ($81,500). Other outlays include staff time ($23,340), software ($15,000), extra textbooks ($5,500) and two touchless bottle fillers ($5,4000).

Some of the equipment, such as webcam speakers, headphones, laptop projectors and iPads, were purchased through the Donors Chose Program from 3M and other companies.

Some extra funds for sanitizing supplies ($8,590) need to be used by 2022. Extra funds for technology were used for some of the Chromecast televisions for classrooms.

The district also applied for $20,000 from Martin County CARES Act money, to be used for iPads and substitutes because of COVID absences.

In other business:

— Superintendent Allison Schmidt reported that open enrollment is going well, with 107 enrolling out of district and 130 enrolling into the district. K-12 enrollment is 665 students.

Brusky reported the games will be livestreamed through the Martin County West activities page on Facebook. He is looking for volunteers to do play by play. Basketball games also will be streamed.

— Elementary Principal Abbey Smith noted that senior high students who want to take PSEO must contact her by the end of October since registration is Nov. 2.

— The board accepted the resignation of board member Michelle Anderson after 16 years of service.
