Faribault Co. gives out $30K to St. Casimir’s

BLUE EARTH — Faribault County commissioners took action Tuesday to allocate money from the CARES Act to one more school in the county.

St. Casimir’s School in Wells had just hired a new principal when the school year began and was not prepared to come to the board with funding proposals in September, when commissioners heard from other schools.

Principal Diane Edwards identified some of the school’s needs.

“We are currently doing in-person learning,” she explained. “However, we are looking to improve our technology in case we would have to go to virtual learning. We also would like to add a hand-sanitizing station and a secured entry system to control traffic into our school.”

Edwards was asked if the school has any computers for students.

“We were able to use some other grant money to purchase computers,” she replied. “We are still working on getting them set up.”

Edwards also was asked what the current enrollment is at the school.

“We have 26 students in grades K-6, nine in preschool and a number of kids in after-school care,” she said.

The board passed a resolution to make up to $30,000 available to St. Casmir’s School.

Commissioners also took action awarding the sale of refunded jail bonds to Northland Securities. A total of six bids were received for the resale of the bonds.

Arcelia Detert of PFM Financial Advisors told the board the new interest rate will be 0.67 percent.

“The maturity date is 2028,” Detert explained. “The net savings to the county would be about $301,000, or about $40,000 per year.”
