CEYLON — Ceylon plans to hold a citywide cleanup day May 23.

Residents may haul items to the city shop from 8-11 a.m. free of charge. Those preferring curbside pickup will need to purchase a tag for $10 from City Hall before 3 p.m. May 21. The number of items picked up cannot be more than would fit in the back of a pickup truck or additional tags will be needed.

Items to be “repurposed” may be placed on the curb May 16. Anyone wishing to take those items may do so.

May 18 is the date to begin putting items out for curbside pickup with tags. Any items not removed by Waste Management after May 23 must be removed by residents by May 25.

The city encourages residents to take advantage of this free service. Having unsightly properties is an ordinance violation and the cleanup gives residents the chance to clean up their land.

Waste Management will not pick up electronics, loose shingles, tires, batteries, chemical products, liquid waste (such as paint), yard waste (grass shrubs and trees), or hazardous and infectious waste, asbestos, oil products and appliances.

Anyone wishing to have appliances picked up at the curb may purchase a tag for $15 per appliance. Larry Kling will haul them away.

In other action at the City Council meeting this week, the topic of a possible liquor store in Ceylon was discussed. Council members reminded those considering such an endeavor to go through the process, which includes an application for a liquor license and background check, etc. Forms are available at City Hall.

In another matter, the city is reminding residents not to flush anything down toilets other than toilet paper. Other items can clog up pumps in the sanitary sewer system. This requires expensive repairs, paid for by Ceylon taxpayers.

The city’s finances also are facing a possible hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, which may delay state aid and local property tax payments.
