Sherburn rejects business plan

SHERBURN — Sherburn City Council has rejected a proposal that would have created a new business at a former church at 321 Lake St.

Kay Ebeling and Amber Singleton wanted to acquire the site and open Highway 4 Thrift and Craft.

The council would like to make the property available for after-school activities or other community events. The council will discuss plans with Gene Scheppman, who donated the property.

In other action this week, the council appointed Bank Midwest as the city depository, Martin County Star as the city newspaper, Ringnell Insurance as agent of record, and the firm of Costello, Carson, Butzon and Schmit as city attorney. It also approved mayoral appointments for 2020 to be the same as last year.

In other business, the council:

o Heard a report that Temperance Lake Ridge is in good shape financially, and occupancy is in excess of available rooms.

o Heard a report that the liquor store inventory is complete as of Jan. 1. It was reported that the computer system used works well for the kitchen and bar, but off-sale needs a different type of data. When the system was purchased, it was said to be good for off-sale inventory and sales data.

o Heard comments from council member Carlee Hunter, who asked about advanced communication about holiday hours and whether City Hall will be closed. City staff will take the suggestion under advisement.

o The date for the next council meeting was changed to 5 p.m. Jan. 22 at City Hall. The reason is that Monday, Jan. 20, is Martin Luther King Day, a holiday.
