Martin Co. West students earn awards

SHERBURN — A CREST Lunch and Learn will be held 11 a.m. today at the Senior Citizens Center in Sherburn. The program will take a look at the 2020 census.

Following the presentation, a soup and sandwich lunch will be served. Donations for the lunch are always welcome.

Anyone in the area who is interested is invited to attend.

An after-prom meeting for parents of Martin County West 11th-grade students will be 7 p.m. tonight in the cafeteria at the high school in Sherburn.

Also this evening, a “Men’s Night” will be held at 7 p.m. at the high school gymnasium in Sherburn.

The monthly steak fry will be 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Club in Sherburn. The public is welcome.

Recently selected to represent Martin County West High School were the following students: Triple A representatives Emily Matejka, daughter of Roger and Rita Matejka; and Todd Morrow, son of Scott and Amy Morrow. The Triple A Award is given to students who excel at academics, arts and athletics. Students must have a 3.0 or better grade point average to qualify.

ExCel representative is Gabriella Lange, daughter of Mark and Joanna Lange. The ExCel Award is given to Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and work voluntarily in their community.

The HOBY representative this year is Jacob Fiala, son of Rodney and Ann Marie Fiala. The HOBY Award is given to sophomore students who show positive leadership skills, innovation and a willingness to serve their community.

These students will be recognized for their selection and achievements between the B and A squad girls basketball games on Jan. 16 in Sherburn.

A book sale is going on during January at Martin County West Jr./Sr. High School in Sherburn. All paperback books are 25 cents while hardcover books are $1. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday in the high school media center. Proceeds will help buy new books for the library.

A pancake, sausage and egg breakfast is served 8-10 a.m. every Monday morning at the Regional Worship Center in Sherburn. All are welcome.

Sherburn Legion Auxiliary will host a pancake feed from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the American Legion Club in Sherburn.

There will be a free family swim every third Saturday during the winter and spring months at the indoor pool in Sherburn. Times are 10:30-11:30 a.m. Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 21 and April 18. Mark these dates on your calendar. Please bring your own water toys. An adult must accompany children.

The indoor pool in Sherburn is open for fitness swims from 6-8 a.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Water aerobics will be held 7-8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. No pre-registration is necessary. There is also a special needs swim time from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Anyone with mental, physical or emotional disability is welcome to attend this special swim hour.

Martin County West Dollars for Scholars online website is now open for starting an application process. Students should create or update their student profile for scholarships to be given next spring at the May banquet, or to find other scholarships.
