MCW board OKs tax levy

SHERBURN – Martin County West School board talked money this week.

The board heard a presentation from independent auditor Eide Bailly and held the annual Truth-in-Taxation hearing for the 2019-2020 budget and local property tax levy.

The school board ratified both presentations.

In other action, the board approved new policy proposals discussed at its last meeting. These involve indoor air quality/fragrance free for the building, a personnel policy change and a policy for unpaid meal charges for employees.

In other matters, the board:

o Hired Debbora Larson in the food service department and Zane Borchardt as a paraprofessional; increased hours for Lindsey DeHaai for 3-year-old preschool; and added Katie Thiesse, Brandon Greiner, Jeff Scholl and Randy Nelson as coaches.

o Learned there will be an open house at the renovated Lincoln School in Fairmont. It now houses Southern Plains Arise Academy. The event will be 4-7 p.m. Jan. 8.

o Learned a Maverick Mentor of the Week program has begun, the indoor pool in Sherburn is up and running, and the school’s Facebook Page is doing well.

o Heard a report from Principal Chad Brusky from Trimont who said there are two programs upcoming: On Feb. 5 there will be a seizure awareness presentation for students and staff; on March 24 there will be an interactive presentation for students and parents from the Jacob Wetterling Foundation.
