GHEC board updated

GRANADA — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board on Thursday heard several reports from administrators.

Superintendent Doug Storbeck noted, “I’m working with Lisa Shellum (Truman’s superintendent) to determine if we can offer an agriculture course. That’s one of the requirements for our students to participate in FFA. That’s something that we need to finalize because we do have students that want to participate in FFA and I think it’s an excellent avenue for our students.”

He also said the school will have a trial E-Learning day Oct. 31. E-Learning days are opportunities for students to study at home during weather-related school closures. E-Learning days are new for the district this year. They allow high school students to take home electronic devices from the school to learn at home.

“We’re not going to leave the students at home, but they’re going to come here and we’re going to practice like it’s a snow day for an hour or two so hopefully we can get rid of any bugs that we might run into,” Storbeck said.

Principal Taylor Topinka gave a brief report. He began by noting how well homecoming week went and thanked the student council for its hard work in planning activities. He said there were 161 runners during the annual FunRun.

Activities director Erin Roiger gave a report in which she said it is near the end of the fall sports season and the winter sports activity sheet will go up next week. She is still looking for a winter cheerleading coach, as well as B and C girls basketball coaches. Roiger hopes to fill the positions by the end of the month.

In other news, the board approved revised student handbooks for the elementary and high schools in order to update the attendance policy. Storbeck said they no longer want parents to call in when their children miss school because they are sick or otherwise. Instead, the district would like documentation in the form of a handwritten note or email.

In other action, the board accepted a donation of $6,161 worth of supplies from Fairmont 3M.
