Swea City hit by storm, recovering

SWEA CITY — Kossuth County Emergency Management is reporting that cleanup in Swea City has concluded following a violent wind storm that swept through earlier this week.

According to the agency:

The storm struck about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday. Swea City saw sustained winds of 75 mph, with gusts up to 95 mph. The most damage was done to trees, with minor damage to buildings. The damage estimate, however, has been placed at $2 million.

After the storm, the northern portion of Swea City was without power. Alliant Energy responded, restoring power within a few hours. Three homes had no power until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the agency requested mutual aid from Kossuth County, Algona, Bancroft and Lakota for heavy equipment. Private parties and local farmers also volunteered heavy equipment. In all, 11 dump trucks, two side dumps, three payloaders, one backhoe and seven skid loaders were utilized.

Request were made for manpower to run chainsaws and perform manual labor. Labor came from North Kossuth Schools, North Union Schools, Algona High School, Estherville Fire Department, Swea City Fire Department, Swea City Ambulance, Brand FX, Bank Plus, Iowa Lakes Electric Co-op, River View Trucking, Laubenthaul Excavating, Phil Hardt, Craig Deim – Channel Seeds, Justin Deim, Dahl’s Tree Service and many others.

Cleanup was supported by Kossuth County Emergency Management, Wright County Emergency Management, Emmet County Emergency Management and the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office. Country Inn & Bar, ABCM Main St. Manor, Farm Bureau Financial Services, Main St. Pub and Grill and the American Red Cross provided meals, snacks, pop and water.
