Welcome eyes housing project

WELCOME — Lisa Onken of Southern Minnesota Housing this week discussed plans the city of Welcome has for four-plex housing.

She told the City Council and Economic Development Authority that the project is viable. Council members said the city has a waiting list for renters.

The council decided to study the project further, and possibly plan it for next year since the city has had so many expenditures this year.

In other business at the council meeting, Bill Eckles from BEVCOMM discussed plans to install fiber optic and cable, and why the business is so far behind because of the weather. He hopes the completion date will now be December 2020, with work beginning this spring.

In another matter, engineer Travis Winter of Bolton & Menk offered an update on the street projects, noting that First, Campbell and Second Street utility work is done. The council discussed the Fourth Street curb project price. Winter believes it will be about $20,000 but will update the council at the next meeting.

In other business, the council:

o Approved increasing the fire call fee to $1,000 for out the door, and $250 for each hour.

o Heard a report from Dawn Jagodzinske of the park committee. It would like to get a second swing that would allow a child and adult to swing together. The council approved the request. The expense of repairing the shelter house also was discussed. Jagodzinske will get cost estimates.

o Approved moving the Nov. 5 meeting to Nov. 4 since Nov. 5 is election day.

o Learned the next meeting of the council will be 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at City Hall.
