Sherburn eyes ordinance

SHERBURN — The first reading of the Rural Service District Ordinance was held at the Sherburn City Council meeting this week.

The ordinance lowers property taxes on bare agricultural land in city limits because such land is not hooked up to city water, sewer or utilities.

In other news, the council discussed repairs of cracked streets and approved Bargen Company to do the work. City administrator Brad Hughes will obtain quotes for seal coating on some streets.

City leaders also talked about reconstruction of North Osborne Street as well as Third and Fourth streets, if the bond information can be combined for all affected streets.

In another matter, the council heard a report that two purchase opportunities have come to the city for the lot south of the MY Guy store. The council will discuss both proposals.

In other business, the council:

o Discussed Temperance Lake Ridge expansion. Groundbreaking will be 11 a.m. June 20. The garages have been moved to make way for construction of the 14 new memory care units.

o Discussed the festival weekend, with favorable comments about the park and seating area. The council discussed the possibility of a cement path from the south side of the park to the north part for wheelchairs and strollers to have easier access. The matter was tabled.

o Heard a report that the city employee will check with Midwest Company, which will inject materials into cracks to repair the Community Hall water leaks, about when the work will be done.

o Was reminded that there will be a short Economic Development Association bond hearing with Shannon Sweeney at 5 p.m. June 24 to approve that bond related Temperance Lake Ridge expansion.

o Learned that its next meeting will be 5 p.m. July 1 at City Hall.
