Football player cases come to end

BLUE EARTH  — Faribault County Attorney Kathryn Karjala says Wyatt Tungland has been sentenced, thus wrapping up prosecutions of the four Blue Earth Area football team players who assaulted a teammate at a Winnebago house party in October 2017.

Tungland, 19, this week was sentenced to four days in the Faribault County Jail, in addition to nine days served. He will be on supervised probation for five years and faces a $1,000 fine.

“This was an extremely serious assault that will impact the victim for the rest of his life,” Karjala said. “These crimes may have been avoided had these young men not been consuming alcohol. I hope that the community takes a long, hard look at the culture of underage drinking and, moving forward, we encourage our youth to make better choices and prevent incidents like this from happening again.”

She thanked the Winnebago Police Department for its work investigating the crimes. She also thanked Special Assistant County Attorney Lamar Piper, who resolved all the cases with jail sentences, community service hours and probation for the adult defendant.
