Sign Up for Fairmont Community Gardens

FAIRMONT — Fairmont residents who would like to grow their own garden, but do not have adequate space, can sign up for a free garden plot with Rural Advantage. Garden plots are 20 x 20 feet. Once plot designation is completed later this spring, the plot is the individual or families to care for the balance of the growing season. Each family plants, cares and harvests their own plot. The garden plots are located at Heritage Acres on the west side of Lake Sisseton.

Fairmont Community Gardens are private garden plots in a community space. If you would like to have a plot in 2019 or just have questions, contact Rural Advantage at (507) 238-5449 or linda@ruraladvantage.org. Leave your name, phone number and email.

Rural Advantage is a Fairmont based nonprofit working on issues focused on agriculture, environment and rural communities. This is the ninth year Rural Advantage has coordinated the Fairmont Community Gardens.

Donations lower Owatonna bond referendum

OWATONNA (AP) — School leaders in southeast Minnesota hope voters will approve a $116 million bond referendum this spring to replace the district’s aging high school after donations from three major businesses helped drop the cost by at least $22 million.

Some Owatonna Public Schools officials believe the bill could lower even more as other businesses express interest in replacing the nearly 100-year-old building, the Star Tribune reported.

The referendum, which has been scaled back from its initial $138 million price tag, will be held May 14. The impact on a resident that owns a $175,000 home will be about $23 per month.

Insurance company Federated Insurance has pledged $20 million to the efforts, while Wenger Corp. has offered about $2 million in its music, theater and athletic products.
