Truman Days searching for volunteer help

TRUMAN — Truman City Council this week talked about the need for more Truman Days volunteers.

A Truman Days meeting is set for 7 p.m. March 10 at the fire hall.

“I went to a meeting and it was alarming to see that there was myself and then three others that are going to stay on to plan, and then the rest are going to be getting off, so we really need volunteers,” said city administrator Bethanie Ekstrom.

Council members expressed some frustration with the lack of people willing to volunteer to help plan and organize events such as the parade. Ekstrom encouraged council members to spread the word that volunteers are needed.

“We don’t want to lose our Truman Days,” said Mayor Lynn Brownlee. “It’s a big deal.”

Moving along to other matters, the council adopted two new ordinances.

The first allows and regulates the keeping of chickens in residential zones. The permit fee is $20 per coop.

The second ordinance deletes the requirements of a conditional use permit for an accessory building.

In other business, the council received a quote from Fast Flooring in the amount of $1 per square foot to recoat and $3 per square foot to refinish the floors in the community building. Fast Flooring refinished the floors in the community building in 2015.

“I don’t think we were very happy with the work they did,” said council member Kathy Hendricksen.

Council member Jake Ebert guessed the area involved to be about 2,400 square feet.

Ekstrom said she contacted another local business but had not yet received a response.

The council agreed to keep looking for other options.

In other news, Truman’s city attorney, Jim Wilson, has turned in his letter of resignation, effective March 31. Proposal letters have been sent out to other attorneys.
