GHEC roof work complete

GRANADA — Superintendent Mandy Fletcher on Thursday provided the Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board with an update on second floor roof construction.

The roof was damaged and needed to be replaced following a Sept. 20 storm during which tornadoes touched down in Granada.

Fletcher praised the construction crew for fast, quality work. The goal was to complete the project in four weeks, but there was a week during which temperatures were in the single digits, and winds made it dangerous to be on the roof.

“They spent many long days where they could be here and then weekends; they spent all last weekend here to make sure we could be up in those classrooms on Monday,” Fletcher noted.

She said the decking is down, the insulation is in and the rubber is down.

In other business at the meeting, activities director Erin Roiger offered an update on athletics and fine arts.

“Winter sports are in full swing,” she said.

Roiger provided some current numbers on sports teams, keeping in mind that students from GHEC, Truman and Martin Luther make up a team. There are 38 in boys basketball grades 9-12, 37 in girls basketball grades 9-12, 15 in boys basketball grades 7-8 and 19 in girls basketball in grades 7-8. There is one student participating in wrestling in Fairmont and one participating in hockey. There are six girls participating in winter cheerleading.

“I was approached by some parents about offering tennis for a couple soon-to-be seventh-graders, so I spoke to Fairmont’s activities director Mat Mahoney,” Roiger said. “They’re open to it as long as it doesn’t bump them up to a different class. He wants to hold off a little bit until we have our reclassification meeting in the spring, but I think it sounds hopeful.”

Roiger also said that at a recent meeting it was decided that the school board would discuss whether to bring in students from area parochial schools for spring sports teams.

“The need is there for spring sports, for baseball and softball,” she noted. “We won’t have enough numbers between the three schools grades 9-12 to support a program. So we need to look at forming a co-op with the parochial schools.”

In other news, district science teacher Melissa Smith gave the board a recap of a technology integration conference she attended earlier this week in the Twin Cities.

“We listened to some keynote speakers that were really awesome,” she said. “We also went to several breakout sessions; one was on Chromebooks and another on student engagement and how to keep students involved.”

In other news:

o The board approved the 2019 property tax levy of $1.78 million.

o Fletcher thanked board members Troy Jensen and Bryan Nowicki for each serving eight years on the school board as Thursday marked their last meeting.
