Senior site expansion in works

SHERBURN — Members of the Sherburn City Council who attended a recent meeting at Temperance Lake Ridge reported back to the council this week that a feasibility study concerning the expansion of the senior living site is complete.

They say Temperance Lake Ridge hopes to begin expansion plans by spring. The plan may include 14 units and two garages connected to the building.

Some discussion about the staff needed for more units concluded that the staff will be available since management has some potential employees ready for interviews. There would be a need for five to seven more employees.

The council agreed that the city’s contract with Temperance Lake Ridge is probably the best investment the city has made. Officials say the site is 90 percent filled and has a waiting list of 20 to 30 potential residents. The contract the city entered into with the facility in 2015 is for 15 years and can be renewed.

In other city news:

o City administrator Brad Hughes reported that a water line smoke test done in the northwest corner of town provided some interesting results. A leak was found on the Kum & Go property, accounting for the water problem in that part of town. Council members suggested a smoke test for other parts of the town.

o The council discussed the ordinance about parking on grass, in back of properties and unattended on the street. The council approved starting the process by posting reading dates and publishing the planned ordinance. The ordinance can be seen on the city’s website — cityofsherburn.com — or on its Facebook page. The council agreed that most residents already comply with the rules.

o Sherburn Civic and Commerce Committee plans to buy eight planters for Main Street and plant them with flowers. The city will be responsible for fertilizing and watering the plants. The council thanked the committee.
