MCW adjusts homecoming

SHERBURN — The Martin County West School Board has approved a change for next year’s homecoming celebration.

High School Principal David Traetow suggested moving coronation of the king and queen to the all-school pep fest held at 3 p.m. on the Friday of homecoming week.

The school board agreed that MCW should try this new coronation time because it will allow elementary students to be more involved. Coronation on Monday nights is poorly attended, and has changed drastically from the type of program during which skits were performed.

The board approved moving coronation to Friday next year.

Turning to another matter, the board decided to dissolve the cooperative sponsorship of wrestling with Fairmont Area High School so there can be an application for a cooperative sponsorship of wrestling with Granada-Huntley-East Chain High School and Fairmont Area High School.

In other business, the board:

o Thanked the Schmeeckle Foundation and Fox Lake Conservation League for donations to aid the high school robotics program.

o Approved selling a 2008 Chevy van. Quotes will be obtained.

o Ratified the staff development plan, with the board thanking the teachers who worked on the goals. There are four identified in the plan: the professional goal, reading and math goal, continuing education goal and technology goal.

o Learned that Frontier Communications was asked via registered letter in June to disconnect Martin County West Schools from its products, but did not disconnect until September. The school is asking Frontier for a refund/credit. Superintendent Allison Schmidt will report back to the board on the matter.

o Learned that parent-teacher conferences for K-12 students are scheduled for Nov. 13, while conferences for students in grades K-6 will be held Nov. 15.

o Learned that the next meeting of the Martin County West School Board will be 6:15 p.m. Nov. 19.
