GHEC trims levy hike

GRANADA — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain School Board set a proposed 2019 property tax levy Thursday. In a 6-0 vote, the board voted to set the levy at $200,000 below the maximum of roughly $1.8 million.

Superintendent Mandy Fletcher said the levy is an increase from this year, but GHEC is still under-levying by $200,000. Fletcher explained that most districts across the state certify their levy at the maximum amount.

“We chose not to because we know it would be another increase in taxes and we’re trying our best to be fiscally responsible,” she said.

Fletcher said that while they want the best for their students, an increase in enrollment and other improvements across the district made it possible to certify the levy for less than the maximum.
