Red Rock hosting 30 artists

This month, there is not just one featured artist at Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont but about 30 local artists whose works are being displayed.

The community art show continues through Aug. 30.

“For the most part, they’re from Fairmont but there’s a couple from Blue Earth,” said Red Rock director Sonja Fortune. “There’s both men and women and younger people who are still in school, retired people and people who are still working.”

Featured artists include: Victoria Swanson, Lynn Reeves, Diane Armbrust, Ron Davison, Kate Kallenbach, JoAnn Rehling, Lill Robinson, Kari Schaper, Linda Wells, Char Kahler, Sandy Langford, Gwen Kallemeyn, Arden Hanson, Joanne Soma, Kandice Petschke, Don Swanson, Susanna Skripnik, Lauren Wheeler, Larry Peterson, Jen Kahler, Blaire Ensrud, Jane Bogie, Alexandra Ensrud, Barbara Shimmon, Ethan Jordi and Michael Brenneman.

The artwork covers a wide variety of mediums, including acrylic, wood burning, ceramics, sculptures and some paper art, to name a few. Almost everyone involved submitted two pieces.

“We’re also displaying the winners of the photo contest we put on last month,” Fortune said. “Their work is on display, too, and we actually had note cards made with the images of the contest winners that will be available.”

The photo contest featured local images taken around Fairmont.

“Fairmont has some beautiful places to brag about,” Fortune said.

She said Red Rock advertised the community art show through social media, the Sentinel and the Photo Press, and they were able to get everybody in that wanted to display pieces.

“We want people to feel comfortable coming here and showing their work, regardless of their skills level,” she said. “We’re really pleased with the turnout and that these people are sharing their creativity with the community.”

She said Red Rock has been having a community art show about every two years.

“We’re a center maintained for the community so we really want to involve the community with what we’re doing as much as possible,” she said. “Red Rock isn’t just for the experienced professional, it’s for people who are willing and able to share their work.”

Fortune said there will be a people’s choice award, with the community asked to vote. The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate.

“I think people are under the impression that you need to be really good and professional to display your work here but that’s really not what we’re about,” Fortune said. “We’re about bringing the community together to show all sorts of creativity, from the hobby artist all the way through the professional artist.”

An open house will take place 4:30-7 p.m. Aug. 23. Fortune said most of the artists will be there at that time.

For those who would like to view the community art show, gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, and weekends and evenings by appointment.
