Faribault Co. honors Legion

BLUE EARTH — The Faribault County Commission passed a resolution Tuesday to designate Aug. 24 as American Legion Day.

Veterans Service Officer Jenna Schmidtke and American Legion representative Don Amundson met with commissioners to initiate the request.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. This year marks its centennial anniversary.

“We’re here today to ask for your support in passing a resolution supporting the 100th anniversary,” Schmidtke told the board. “Minnesota had the honor to host the first national convention in November 1919, and now also holds the honor of hosting this year’s national convention in Minneapolis at the Convention Center.”

Meanwhile, Amundson said the objective of the county’s Veterans Service Office is to preserve history of the American Legion for future generations.

“Our goal is to recognize the American Legion in their hundred years of contributions, and to encourage them for another 100 years,” he said.

In other action, the board:

o Approved the hiring of deputy sheriff Tom Elmer and the rehiring of staff engineer William Goo.
