Opera House set for summer

The Fairmont Opera House has scheduled a series of summer events ranging from its own children and adult theater productions, to tribute bands honoring the Beatles and Pink Floyd, to the 50th anniversary tour of a world-famous musical group.

Many of the slated performers appear in much larger venues across the country and for much higher ticket prices, said Blake Potthoff, executive director of the Opera House.

“You get that same show here. It’s the same high quality, and it’s right here in Fairmont,” he said. “You don’t have to drive three hours and spend a weekend and a thousand bucks to see a good show.”

The summer event series includes:

o Children’s Theatre Workshop for grades K-2, 7 p.m. June 8.

o FOH Tony Awards Party, 6 p.m. June 10. There will be a live stream of the awards show on the Opera House’s giant screen, as well as raffles and auctions and awards for best dressed and best costume. “We want people to dress up, take some pictures and have fun with it,” Potthoff said.

o Looking Bacharach, 7:30 p.m. June 14. The group pays homage to singer, songwriter and producer Burt Bacharach who had more than 70 Top 40 hits.

o Fab 6, 7:30 p.m. June 26. This musical tribute to the Beatles highlights the quartet’s studio years which produced “Sergeant Pepper,” “Magical Mystery Tour” and “Abby Road.”

o Block Party, July 7. A capital campaign fundraiser for the Opera House’s renovation and addition, this daylong community event will be held in the open lot next to the Opera House. From 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., musical groups, including the funky sounds of Soul Sherpa, will perform, and there will be a vendor show, food, drinks and games. The day will culminate with a 7:30 p.m. concert by Run Like Hell, lauded as America’s premier Pink Floyd show.

o Civic Summer Theatre, July 24-29. Now in its 53rd year, the local thespian organization will stage “Guys and Dolls.”

o Belle Amour, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4. This four-piece Minnesota group performs vintage jazz.

o Children’s Theatre Workshop for grades 3-8, Aug 10-11.

o The Sweet, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31. Culminating the summer events series will be the internationally famous band, The Sweet, which is on its 50th anniversary tour. The band is best known for its hits like “Fox on the Run,” “Ballroom Blitz” and the song that makes you want to sing along, “Little Willy.”

Tickets for any of the performances can by purchased by contacting the Opera House at (507) 238-4900 or at www.fairmontoperahouse.org and clicking on “A La Carte” from the drop-down menu for 2017-2018 performances.

Potthoff encourages people to buy their tickets early as the groups performing have a wide fan base. He cited The Sweet as an example.

“The first five tickets we sold were to people from out of town. They actually were from out of state,” he said.

Proceeds from performances always are reinvested into the Opera House, a building nearing 120 years of age.

“There’s so many things to take care of in this historic building,” Potthoff said. “We need to change the light system, some things around the stage, make it ADA accessible. We want to make sure we fix it right before we start the new building.”

He is referring to the future plans to build an addition onto the existing structure. The Opera House recently purchased and razed the building directly south of the historic venue for offices and meeting rooms, and began a $10 million capital campaign to raise funds for repairs in the existing venue and for the new construction.

“We’ve got some money to raise yet,” Potthoff said. “We want to have about a third of the money before beginning the project. We want to make sure we fix up the current facility first so if the space next door stays bare for a while, that’s intentional. It means that we have money to spend on making the Opera House lasts longer.”
