Clean up day on Saturday

SHERBURN — Grilled burgers will be served 6-8 p.m. tonight at the Sherburn American Legion. All are welcome.

Sherburn residential clean-up day will be held Saturday. Items may be brought to the lot behind City Hall between 8 a.m. and noon, or when the trucks are full. This is for Sherburn city residents only. You must bring a copy of your utility bill and photo ID to the drop site when you come on Saturday. General non-hazardous household “junk,” mattresses, box springs, couches, chairs, small amounts of remodeling materials such as siding, drywall, carpet, dried out paint cans, etc., will be accepted. Appliances such as stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves will require a tag, which may be purchased at City Hall in advance of the clean-up day. Appliances with a tag may be left curbside at your residence for pick-up. No pallets, tires, shingles, oil, batteries, yard waste or tree branches will be accepted.

The annual Greenwings event will be going on from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at MCW Jr./Sr. High School in Sherburn. This event is for preschoolers through teenagers and will include games, learning activities, a bouncy house, hotdog lunch and more. There will also be a dog training demonstration and a “Bee Lady” from the DNR to talk about pollinators and such. Please bring the kids by.

MCW honors banquet for senior students will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Sherburn American Legion.

Track & Field Day for MCW students in grades 5-6 is scheduled 12:15-3 p.m. tomorrow at the MCW Elementary School in Trimont. 3rd and 4th graders will have their Track & Field Day from 12:15-3 p.m. on Friday. Family members and friends may come and watch.

End-of-the-year field trips are being planned for our local elementary students. MCW 1st graders will visit Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday. Fourth graders will enjoy a field trip to the Dirby Science Discovery Center at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls next Tuesday, while the 3rd grade class will visit the Butterfly House in Sioux Falls on May 23.

Avenue of Flags will once again be raised at the Sherburn City Park over the Memorial Day weekend. The flags will be installed beginning 8 a.m. on May 26, and they will be retired 6 p.m. on May 28. Volunteers, young and old, are needed for this project which has become a tradition in our community. Make plans now if you’re able to help put up the flags, take them down, or to do both on those dates. Four new flags will be dedicated during the 10:30 a.m. Memorial Day program at the city park. The four veterans that will have new flags dedicated and flown for the first time are Wayne Barber, Earl Burmeister, Ralph Crissinger and Willard Peters.

A beef commercial supper and cookie walk will be 5-7 p.m. May 24, at the Eagles Club located 1228 W. Lake Ave. in Fairmont. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to the Martin County Relay for Life team, “Swensen’s Steppers.” Everyone is welcome to come and join them and enjoy good food for a good cause.

A Relay for Life Survivor supper and program will be held 5 p.m. June 7, at the KC Hall in Fairmont. All area cancer survivors are invited to come and eat free of charge, but please RSVP if you plan to attend before June 1 by texting or calling Tori at (507) 399-3667. Caregivers are also welcome to come and eat for a free will donation.

CREST of Martin County will host a training session for anyone who might be interested in becoming a CREST volunteer 6:30 p.m. May 24, at the CREST office, 820 Winnebago Ave. in Fairmont. Reservations are required so that enough volunteer manuals can be ordered. Please call (507) 235-3833 before May 21 if you’re interested in attending.
